YAG laser treatment

Laser treatment can be highly-effective in treating several eye conditions, including some types of glaucoma, and Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO), which has resulted from cataract surgery.

What happens first?

Posterior Capsule Opacification sometimes occurs as a result of cataract surgery. A small proportion of cataract surgery patients (less than 5%) find their eyesight becomes hazy or clouded, due to the outer cells of their old lens moving to the back of their eye and starting to grow.

There’s no need for a separate consultation if you need YAG laser surgery. Your surgeon will invite you to a 30-minute appointment to check the treatment is right for you. It’s also the chance for you to ask any questions you may have. If you decide to proceed, the laser treatment can be carried out straight away. No waiting around required.

YAG laser treatment is quick and pain-free, although you might feel a slight discomfort when the laser is used.

What is YAG surgery?

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a common complication after cataract surgery. PCO is not an inevitable outcome of cataract surgery but can occur when scar tissue forms on the back of the lens sac which is unsettled during surgery. There is no way to tell who will, and who won’t develop PCO. PCO is the clouding and thickening of the back portion of the lens capsule, the membrane that holds the artificial lens in place after cataract removal. This scar tissue can cause visual disturbance and reduce visibility due to the scar tissue preventing light from entering the eye.

Treatment options

YAG laser capsulotomy is highly effective in treating PCO, with a low risk of complications. YAG laser can be performed as a non-invasive outpatient procedure. Before a YAG laser procedure takes place, the eye will undergo a thorough exam. This is primarily to ensure the clouding is due to PCO rather than any other condition. This short, pain-free procedure allows light to re-enter the eye, usually resolving visual disruption immediately. Due to the immediate improvement in vision, patients are usually incredibly satisfied with this procedure.

Step 1: Preparing for procedure

You’ll be given drops in your eye to dilate your pupil. You’ll also be given anaesthetic drops to number your eye.

Step 2: During the procedure

Once the anaesthetic takes effect, the surgeon will take you to the laser room, and sit you in front of a machine. A laser will be aimed at your eye to create an opening to let light in.

Step 3: Treatment length

The treatment takes about 15 minutes, but the laser part of the appointment only lasts a minute or so. After which the surgeon will re-examine your eye to make sure the procedure was successful.

Aftercare

You’ll be able to go home as soon as your surgeon is happy that the YAG laser surgery has been successful. Once the eye drops have worn off, you can even drive yourself home. No follow-up appointment is required unless you feel you are having problems. Your eye might feel mildly uncomfortable for two to three days after laser surgery.

5 tips for safe and speedy recovery after YAG Laser surgery

One of the most critical aspects of a successful recovery is to follow your doctor’s post-operative instructions to the letter. This may include using prescribed eye drops, avoiding strenuous activities, and attending follow-up appointments. Your doctor knows best, so trust their guidance for a smooth recovery process.
After YAG laser treatment, it’s essential to give your eyes time to rest and recover. Avoid activities that strain your eyes, such as reading for long periods or staring at screens. Take regular breaks to rest your eyes and ensure you get plenty of sleep to aid the healing process.
During the recovery period, it’s crucial to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and potential irritants. Wear sunglasses when outdoors, and avoid rubbing or touching your eyes to prevent infection. Follow your doctor’s recommendations for eye protection to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications.
Proper hydration and nutrition play a vital role in the recovery process. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and promote overall well-being. Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients can also help support the healing of your eyes post-YAG laser treatment.

Give your eyes the time they need to heal fully. Stay positive and focused on the benefits of the treatment, knowing that clearer vision and improved eye health are on the horizon.
